KAREN CLARK SHEARD: Gospel great to unveil fashion line
KAREN CLARK SHEARD first graced the world with her vocal talent as the youngest member of the legendary Clark Sisters gospel singing group. Sheard, in due time, went solo and has enjoyed success as a four-time Grammy winner and as a motivational speaker. She is now aiming for a footprint in fashion with her new line of apparel that she says will allow women to dress with taste and class.
Sheard will debut the collection, plus a few other gems, during her White Carpet Opening Gala & Fashion Show on Sept. 10 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The show will include her daughter, Kierra “KiKi” Sheard; Erica Campbell (half of the Mary Mary duo); and hostess Vickie Winans. All three inspirational singers are powerhouses in their own right.
The fashion gala is a kickstart to the KCS Ladies First Empowerment Summit, which will take place the following three days. The Clark Sisters, R&B singer Faith Evans and other notable women are scheduled to speak. Mama Sheard spoke with me about beauty, fashion and esteem during her Fashion Fair cosmetics red-carpet appearance at Dillard’s in Greenbrier Mall on Thursday. Here are snippets:
On how she feels about her collaboration with Fashion Fair and the legacy brand’s endurance among a sea of competitors that now target women of color:
I am very proud. I was introduced to Fashion Fair when I was allowed to wear makeup. I was maybe 15 or 16. My mother was strict about makeup. I have worn Fashion Fair for at least 30 years.
On how big of a presence the White Carpet Fashion Show will have in relation to the three-day summit:
That’s the highlight of the whole summit. In addition to showing my clothing line, there will be a lot of pieces available that I’ve worn during my performances and won’t wear anymore. I also will include my sister’s line (Dorinda Clark-Cole’s Rose Collection). It’s going to be like “Rip the Runway.” I’m going to do something different. I’m going to have Erica and Kierra walk (the runway) even as they’re singing.
On the significance of including the likes of Campbell, Evans and Winans:
What makes these women remarkable is that they have a testimony. They were consistent in their walk with God. They were persistent in endeavoring to move forward with their career.
On what moved her to add a line of apparel to her numerous endeavors:
I love clothes, and when you love something, that should be your motivation to pursue your goal and to motivate others. I have loved fashion since I was born. I’ve been holding onto this dream for the last 30 years.
On the breadth of the clothing line:
There is going to be a mixture of casual and dress attire. Its appeal will be from youth to middle age. I’ll give you something that you can look forward to.
